ARTIST STATEMENT:

Natalie Dawkins is a London based artist working in both photography and video. Much of Natalie's work comes from an interest in observing how we construct ourselves for situations and the way in which situations also construct us. Often inviting her subjects to be filmed alone, she gives them a short set of instructions to be carried out within a lengthy timeframe. Working in collaboration with her subjects, her aim is to explore the subtle nuances in behaviour and the slips that occur between the posed and un-posed moments. There is often an element of humour at play both within the concepts and resulting works, with the potential of interruption and unexpected behaviour in the responses of the subjects themselves.

BIOGRAPHY:

Having completed a degree in Photography and Digital Media in 2006, Natalie went on to work in the image industry within picture research and production management roles, while undertaking private and commercial commissions as a freelance photographer. In 2011 Natalie began the MA Photography course at London College of Communication, University of the Arts London, which she is due to complete in December 2012.

Natalie has worked with a range of clients from both the public and private sector and her work has been used in advertising campaigns, press releases, music videos, album artwork and websites. Her photographic work features in advertising within Selfridges London, while her video work has been showcased in collaboration with musicians on MTV2 and in the Topshop flagship store on Oxford Street. Natalie's work has been featured in group exhibitions including The Underground Gallery and AOP Gallery London, while in March 2012 her film piece ‘Smile For The Camera’ was shortlisted as a winner of the Xhibit 2012 prize which toured as a group show in London across venues including CSM, Kingsgate Workshop Trust and the Menier Gallery. Smile for the Camera was also awarded as the judges choice to be further exhibited at the JaguarShoes Collective Film Gallery in August 2012.
